If the inequality of man is baked into the code of nature, then socialism could be viewed as an ameliorative policy agenda that reduces the kinship frictions and societal corrosiveness caused by the grotesquely skewed distribution of wealth within a purely predatory capitalist regime. That has nothing to do with self-centeredness and everything do with fulfilling the desire to live within and as part of a functioning, pleasant, pro-social society. Caveat: It will only work in a racially homogeneous society.
