Leftoid heroes and martyrs always turn out to be unworthy of the accolade. Right-wing heroes in the time of collapse aren't all saints, either, but left-wingers have really mastered the art of recruiting total scumbags to their religious causes. The commonality appears to be declining asabiyyah (social solidarity) as the empire wheezes out. The low trust environment encourages a frantic search by each faction for symbolic figures to rally around, as the sense of impending domestic strife heightens.
