Removing fault (thanks, Reagan) incentivized a lackadaisical attitude toward marital fidelity, both physical and emotional. Interestingly, feminist groups opposed no-fault divorce, perceiving it to open an avenue for "male chauvinists" to evade responsibility for their role in marital dissolution. I suspect that if fault-divorce returned to the US, there would be an initial shock as the marriage market adjusted to the stricter terms of engagement, but in time divorce rates would decline as marriages became stabler due to selection effects and to behavior modification. Not coincidentally, the social forces unleashed by no-fault divorce led to degeneracies like gay marriage, industrial abortion, and women en masse in the workforce.
