The cynic would say that the Catholic Church is having a revenue shortfall problem because well-off Europeans are abandoning Christianity and the brown and black replacements who now fill the pews don't have the same tithing power. The Church overture to Eastern Orthodoxy could be seen as a profit-boosting merger that pools a dwindling supply of high value resources.
