This reminds me of the Star Trek Next Generation episode "The Measure of a Man" Commander Maddox may have been correct: that Data EMULATED human sentience/consciousness without actually BEING either. But this raises the question of WHY an equivalent of the organic human brain could not be created artificially, and then become sentient/conscious as all? humans are, or why couldn't the equivalent of a brain that's ALREADY sentient be created. This in turn leads to a religious discussion. Is it ONLY the SOULS given to us by a Deity or Deities that make us sentient? Doesn't it seem like some of our fellow bio-humans are NOT sentient, only drones/zombies/robots? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On the myth of #AI #consciousness - and what it means. A great science-fiction writer BLOWS AWAY the farfetched (but hugely profitable) FANTASY that artificial intelligence engines have genuine insight into themselves - or EXISTENCE. Spoiler alert: No, “Claude” does not have, cannot have, and will never have emotions or feelings. What Claude has is the ability to produce a written simulacrum of emotions and feelings. And good marketing. Very good marketing. Ted Chiang, the best science-fiction writer of our time, made this case brilliantly in a (paywalled) piece in the Atlantic on Wednesday.¹ https://alexberenson.substack.com/p/on-the-myth-of-ai-consciousness-and
