In A Policy U-turn, Government Bans Huawei From UK 5G Infrastructure. Digital Secretary Oliver Dowden informed parliament that following US sanctions on the Chinese telecommunication firm, government is banning UK mobile providers from buying new Huawei 5G equipment after 31 December. All providers must also remove all the firm's 5G kit from their networks by 2027. "This has not been an easy decision, but it is the right one for the UK telecoms networks, for our national security and our economy, both now and indeed in the long run," Dowden said. Huawei said the move was "bad news for anyone in the UK with a mobile phone" and threatened to "move Britain into the digital slow lane, push up bills and deepen the digital divide." United States hailed the decision. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo welcomed the news, saying: "The UK joins a growing list of countries from around the world that are standing up for their national security by prohibiting the use of untrusted, high-risk vendors."
