Boris Johnson Pushes Ahead After Surviving No-Confidence Vote Following revelations that the British prime minister, other parliamentarians and staff were hosting “wine-time Fridays” during the peak in 2020, of coronavirus lockdown restrictions across the nation, opposition party members and some members of his own Conservative Party, have called for his resignation. Johnson reportedly encouraged aides to “let off steam” despite indoor socializing being banned under lockdown rules.” “The regular event was so popular that staff even invested in a £142 drinks fridge to keep their bottles of white wine, Prosecco and beer cool.” The prime minister was subsequently fined for breaking his own lockdown rules, and he had publicly apologized. At least 15 per cent of Conservative Party Members of Parliament had to write a letter saying they no longer support Johnson, to trigger the no-confidence vote. To survive the vote, Johnson needed 50% of his MPs’ support plus one (180 votes). He indeed survived the no-confidence vote Monday night: 211 to 148, Sir Graham Brady Chairman of the 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, announced. However the numbers were far worse than Downing Street had hoped -- raising questions about Johnson's ability to govern going forward. During a meeting with Cabinet Tuesday, Johnson told senior ministers to "get on with the job," urging them to push the "massive agenda" of Levelling Up investment. "We are able now to draw a line under the issues that our opponents want to talk about," the prime minister said, referencing the opposition Labor Party. https://www.keneci.com/more-on-hotfeed-keneci-channel#h.4twpncokqzik
