This is the flaw at the heart of the American project: The founders did not truly understand human nature. You cannot simply command powerful people not to exercise that power in bending reality to their wills. Either you have a King and a Pope who together declare what is true and what is real plainly, and in public, or you have a hundred thousand nameless, faceless and unaccountable secret schemers doing it in private.
