Christina Aguayo News #new The power was cut for thousands of people in the Bronx -which is the borough with the lowest income and highest poverty rate out of the 5 that make up New York #newyork Critics say this is the plan of communism; the lowest income areas get hit first with disconnections, decay, decline and forced compliance. #bronx This comes right after Zohran Mamdani asked people to set their thermostats to 78 degrees, turn off lights and devices, and conserve electricity “A stable grid means the AC stays on, and lives are saved. Let’s ease demand — and get through the heat — together.” 🟧Fast Fact: New York shut down its largest and most important nuclear plant serving the NYC area in 2021. 🟧The Indian Point Energy Center was a major nuclear power plant that supplied about 25% of New York City’s electricity. 🟧It was a clean, carbon-free, reliable base load power source. The plant had a strong operational record. Con Edison said they cut power to areas of the Bronx because of an “electrical problem” and did it deliberately to stop a wider blackout from spreading. Nearly 6,000 people in the Bronx were left with out power during the hottest day of the year so far in NYC with triple-digit temperatures and heat indices pushing past 110°F The Bronx saw over 5,900 customers without power in the afternoon, that number later dropped but thousands across the city still didn't have power into the evening. Republicans quickly slammed it. Sen. Ted Cruz posted: “In a first-world country, you could turn on the A/C.” Nikki Haley called it “Welcome to socialism.” Other GOP voices called it hypocritical especially with reports of full power and AC at high-profile events like the Taylor Swift/Travis Kelce wedding festivities at Madison Square Garden while low income New Yorkers who live in the Bronx sat in the dark and heat.
