That means he has the right to counsel, the right to due process and, where legally applicable, the right against compelled self-incrimination. Conservatives should not abandon the Bill of Rights simply because the witness is someone they distrust. But Fauci’s constitutional rights do not erase Congress’s responsibility to investigate. Government officials exercised extraordinary power during the pandemic. They influenced whether businesses could open, whether children could attend school, whether workers could keep their jobs and what information Americans were permitted to discuss without being branded dangerous. Those officials cannot demand sweeping public obedience and then act offended when the public asks to see the receipts. Congress should release the relevant emails, award nominations, ethics reviews, financial records and agency determinations. Investigators should establish precisely what government resources were used, who authorized that use and whether the same rules would have been applied to an ordinary federal employee. Fauci’s silence is not a conviction. Hawley’s accusations are not yet a verdict. But after years of government secrecy, shifting explanations and institutional arrogance, refusing every question guarantees that suspicion will continue growing. Science does not require blind faith in powerful personalities. Constitutional government does not require blind faith in Congress, either. Both require evidence, transparency and accountability.
