An exhibition showcasing the "Gigaku masks" used in "Gigaku," a masked dance drama that was popular in ancient Japan, is being held in Nara City.

"Gigaku" is a masked dance drama performed in various masks to the accompaniment of flutes and drums. It is said to have been introduced from the Korean Peninsula during the Asuka period and was also performed at the Great Buddha Opening Ceremony at Todaiji Temple, but gradually declined after the Heian period.

The exhibition is being held at the Nara National Museum in Nara City, and nine Gigaku masks, all of which were made during the Nara period and are associated with Todaiji Temple, are on display.

Of these, the "Karura," a national important cultural property, is a mask modeled after a Buddhist guardian deity originating from a mythical divine bird, and still retains the original green coloring. Analysis of the characters on the back of the mask confirmed that it was made by Kasugano Hitomaro, the mask's original creator.

Additionally, the "Drunken King," a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, is a mask that depicts a drunken king and is characterized by its dignified expression. It is thought to be one of the masks used in the ceremony to open the eyes of the Great Buddha.

Yamaguchi Ryusuke, chief researcher at Nara National Museum, says, "Each mask is very expressive and unique, so I hope people will pay attention to the rich variety."
The exhibition runs until December 22nd of this year.
