Before Europeans ever showed up, slavery already existed in North America, and it doesn’t fit neatly into the way most people picture it today. "Slavery in Indian Country: The Changing Face of Captivity in Early America" looks straight at that history. In many Indigenous societies, war captives weren’t just taken and let go. Some were killed, some were adopted into families, and some were kept as slaves, meaning they were owned, assigned labor, and not free to leave. In some cases, that status could last a lifetime, and children could inherit it. 📔 Check it out here https://amzn.to/4vO3S9I #ad The simple point the book makes is this: slavery in North America didn’t begin with Europeans. It already existed here in different forms long before they arrived.
