It was relocated there in 2025 from Philadelphia to undergo environmental remediation ahead of its final deployment as the "World's Largest Artificial Reef" off the coast of Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida.Crews have been busy scouring the historic 1,000-foot ocean liner to remove all environmentally hazardous materials, wiring, and plastics to make it safe for the marine ecosystem. The ship's massive funnels and radar mast are also being preserved to become the centerpiece of a planned land-based museum in Florida.Following the completion of the remediation and inspection process, the vessel is slated to be towed and sunk in the Gulf of Mexico, with plans targeting deployment off the Florida Panhandle.
