Tabriz (Tauris), Iran 1893 These rare late 19th-century photographs capture the historic city of Tabriz during the Qajar era — one of Iran’s oldest and most important urban centers. Located in northwestern Iran, Tabriz served for centuries as a major crossroads linking Persia with the Caucasus, Anatolia, and the Silk Road trade networks. Because of its strategic location, the city became a center of commerce, diplomacy, and cultural exchange. The images show several important architectural landmarks, including: -The massive Arg of Tabriz (citadel), one of the city’s best-known historical structures -Ruined yet richly decorated Islamic architecture with intricate tilework, likely connected to medieval mosques and religious complexes -Panoramic views of the old urban fabric of Qajar-era Tabriz Historically, Tabriz was a former capital under several Persian dynasties, a major commercial center between East and West and one of the leading cultural and intellectual cities of Iran Even after earthquakes and invasions across centuries, Tabriz remained one of the most influential cities in the region by the late 1800s.
