Lisbon Portugal 1755 Officially: The 1755 Lisbon earthquake, also known as the Great Lisbon earthquake, struck on November 1, 1755, at approximately 09:40 local time, coinciding with the Catholic feast of All Saints' Day. The seismic event, estimated at magnitude 7.7–9.0, had its epicenter in the Atlantic Ocean roughly 290 km (180 mi) southwest of Lisbon, along the Azores–Gibraltar Transform Fault. The disaster was compounded by a massive tsunami that struck Lisbon about 40 minutes after the initial shaking and widespread fires that ignited from overturned candles and stoves. These combined forces destroyed approximately 85% of Lisbon's buildings, including the Royal Palace, major churches, and the Royal Library. The death toll is estimated at 30,000–60,000 in Lisbon alone, with an additional 10,000 deaths in Morocco, bringing the total fatalities across Portugal, Spain, and Morocco to 40,000–50,000.
