The Danish government revives controversial anti-terror law: Experts warn of a breach of Danish legal tradition. The government intends to grant the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET) the authority to monitor released individuals convicted of terrorism and radicalized individuals with no prior convictions using ankle monitors and prohibitions. The bill, which is now being revived, is facing a barrage of criticism. In January, shortly before the general election, the then-Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard circulated a legislative proposal for consultation aimed at tightening controls on released individuals convicted of terrorism offenses and radicalized individuals with no prior convictions. Although the bill formally lapsed due to the election, the new government now intends to implement these far-reaching plans, which include measures such as monitoring mobile phones, GPS surveillance, and contact bans. The proposal has met with unusually broad criticism from the legal think tank Justitia, the Danish Association of Judges, several defense attorneys, and a professor emeritus; all oppose restricting citizens' freedom based on the intelligence services' secret assessments. The bill would make it possible to impose a range of control measures on individuals convicted of terrorism and—in certain cases—radicalized individuals who have not been convicted of a crime, including: residency bans mandatory use of GPS ankle monitors contact bans weapons bans restrictions on internet access and mobile phone usage mandatory participation in psychiatric or psychological treatment mandatory attendance at meetings with a police supervisor.
