The Times of Israel published an article titled Iron Guard at Auction: Romania Gets It Wrong - Again. The author of the article says she attended an auction in Bucharest where a portrait of Horia Sima was also up for auction. The author says that "under Sima's leadership, thousands of Romanian Jews were persecuted, rounded up for deportation, slaughtered. Under Sima's direction, my grandfather was tortured, called a derogatory term for Jew, and thrown into illegal detention for four days. I don't know why he wasn't deported or killed like others in his community. But his fate was in the hands of Sima's henchmen." The portrait was purchased anonymously, and the author laments that "one may never know whether a clandestine fascist or a neo-legionnaire bought it. Privately. Quietly. On the sly. I may never know whether it is displayed (proudly?!) in a private home, gallery, business or museum. It doesn't matter: my eyes are wide open and I will continue to speak out when I can." This is how lies circulate and over time they become truths that cannot be fought because those who would dare to dismantle them would immediately be accused of anti-Semitism and would fall under the law limiting freedom of expression initiated by Crin Antonescu, the current candidate of the so-called "pro-European" alliance in the presidential elections in May. Under Horia Sima's leadership, there was no way that "thousands of Romanian Jews would be persecuted, rounded up for deportation, slaughtered" because in January 1941, when General Ion Antonescu drove the Legionary Movement from power, Romania had not yet entered the war, not a single Jew had been "rounded up for deportation or slaughtered". The reality is that General Ion Antonescu opposed Hitler when he asked him to deport the Jews from Romania. This is something even the author acknowledges when she says that her grandfather survived the war without any problems. Including Shimon Peres in 2010, then the Prime Minister of Israel, publicly thanked Romania for saving 400,000 Jews during World War II.
