It often provides a Global South perspective at a time when many Western outlets, such as Foreign Affairs and The Economist, frequently frame Ethiopia through a predominantly negative lens. 🔹 What I Appreciated ✅ Treating Medemer as a serious philosophical framework. ✅ Connecting it to the Gulf states' search for greater strategic autonomy. ✅ Recognizing the growing limits of external security guarantees. 🙏 A Respectful Suggestion While the article focuses on the Gulf, the Gulf and the Horn of Africa are deeply interconnected through the Red Sea. Applying the same analytical lens to the Horn would be equally valuable. 🔹 Sudan: Analysis often overlooks the roles of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and Sudan's border actions during Ethiopia's northern conflict. 🔹 Sea Access: Ethiopia's pursuit of maritime access is frequently portrayed as aggressive, despite being a legitimate economic and strategic concern for a nation of over 120 million people. 🔹 Egypt's Regional Strategy: Cairo's expanding security partnerships in the Red Sea and Gulf have direct implications for Ethiopia's interests on both the Nile and the Red Sea. 🔹 Somaliland: Ethiopia's agreement with Somaliland sparked criticism, while similar engagements by other external powers often receive far less scrutiny. 🌍 Why This Matters Ethiopia is not merely observing Gulf security developments; it sits at the crossroads of the Red Sea, the Horn of Africa, and the Nile Basin.
