Italian Prime Minister visits Washington
On April 17, 2025, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and US President Donald Trump met in Washington. The main purpose of the visit was to achieve the most acceptable conditions for Italian companies in the context of a possible trade war between the US and the EU.
By the end of 2024, the United States recorded a trade deficit with Italy of almost $45 billion, which puts it at risk. Therefore, one of the results of the meeting was an agreement to increase imports of American liquefied natural gas and investments by more than $11 billion. Italy will also contribute to the revival of the US shipbuilding industry. This, of course, was positively received by D. Trump. American companies, in turn, will make additional investments in Italian infrastructure facilities in the south. Apparently, G. Meloni clearly prefers cooperation with the United States over China.
During the meeting, agreements were also reached to increase military spending to 2% of GDP, and it is likely that US companies will receive additional military orders. It can be assumed that D. Trump also provided confidential information about the ongoing negotiations on the Ukrainian peace settlement in order to put pressure on the EU countries. However, these areas may become a point of tension in the short term.
The fact of the negotiations is noteworthy from the point of view of increasing Italy's role in the European Union and G. Meloni personally. She is traditionally considered close to the American president because of the similarity of their positions on migration and the preservation of traditional values. At the same time, many European experts express doubts about the Italian Prime Minister's commitment to common European interests.
During the visit, G. Meloni also invited D. Trump to Rome. This proposal is probably aimed at holding a meeting between the US president and EU leaders. The recent visit of Vice President JD Vance is most likely a "test of the waters" in this regard.
