*tokes ahead of reality* Oh, fuck it... I need to upgrade my wings. What? Don't think at me like that! My wings have been here the entire time... they just weren't "on". And, yes, having what look like tiny, microscopic slivers of dancing light parading themselves behind me do certainly look like the wings you're thinking of... but these are not simply for flying! And yes, they are indeed "growing" out of my back. But mine are not bird wings you silly past dweller! Think like... Tony Stark, but if he had better style. My "wings" are actually swarms of nano-drones. Now, I know you protosapiens love your science fiction, but... nanotech isn't magic. There's no infinitely adaptable nanomachine because even if there was, there would be another infinitely adaptable nanomachine capable of countering it. That's why I need an upgrade! Custom upgrades cost the most but they give you the most operational advantages. Like I said, these aren't simply for flying. They're defensive protection, nano-mist shielding, they render your conventional kinetics incapable. But, like I said, they're not magic, your body has to grow more. You basically get an artificial organ and most of you presently gorge yourself on... well instead of making you fat it makes your nanite cells which in turn build themselves into multi-synthetic cellular life forms you can control with your mind, as if you have an ethereal third limb... or ethereal wings. Some configurations let you use them as weapon systems as well. Your wings can chew through the wings of another opponent. The more you stay locked in close combat, the more you both lose... but, some systems have hacking capabilities that can directly inject code into other nano machines... one at a time, but with trillions upon trillions of the buggers all working in tandem... you can rip your opponents wings off in a matter of a seconds with sufficiently advanced nanotech! But we have to make it! I mean... it doesn't make itself! The designs are kept secret of course, because if you have the designs it's easy to develop counter capabilities. You can't steal them either, if the nanotech is away from its origination receiver, your brain... they just self-destruct. So you can't steal a person's wing tech by killing them or trying to steal a sample. Not unless you keep them alive. That's why they also make swarm stasis. There are nano critters that simply "impede"... they essentially lock all cellular movement in place, preventing anything from moving. It's not sustainable stasis tho, in that, a person would die pretty quickly if you left them in such a state of partial permanence. Think of it like a flash bang that feels like you're slowly being frozen in place... at least until your own wings can splice their nano net apart and free you. The fact of the matter is, here in the future... nano tech is everywhere, it's apart of everything, it helps keep everything alive for exponentially longer than it should and... it's not all roses, it never is. There are still people who do bad things for bad reasons. Some of us choose to live with friendly competition and advancement participating in Angelic Armageddon, which is basically like the Olympics of nano-tech enhancements. People come to see it from all over the system. We have fake believe Star Trek in the back yard with artificial exomoons and play pretend star ships. We don't go outside our own "Goldilocks zone", largely because the generic sun sats aren't going to generate enough power to create a stable EM field... and with no EM field... your shits gonna be in ultimate bullet hell! So if you want to go outside the inner system you'd have to rig up a whole mess of sun sats... solar pumped lasers in space. We use them for fuel... they're like external warp drive that shoots a beam of concentrated solar energy into a core material that generates... whatever you want. The further away from the sun tho, the less power output they produce. Some people tho... you see... they go to the godly games to steal! People! I mean, like I said, they can't just rip your wings off and run. They are ~apart~ of your particular physiology, directly integrated, they can't be studied or reverse engineered unless the person is either willing or if their tech can be subdued with some other tech. Often it results in a kind of diminishing stalemate, with one form of tech slowly battling against the other, they're locked in check unless they can reproduce more themselves... and that can't happen by magic. That's why remote nano swarm systems are useless, because even though they have ultimate stealth, they can't reproduce without some kind of nano synthetic organ capable of ingestion. Also, the synthetic sugar in this time frame... yeah it's not entirely sugar and contains things "not for you"... meaning, don't eat anything here unless you have a nano synthetic organ!
