I retired from academia before Covid, and student achievement in higher education, generally speaking, was bad enough then. I cannot imagine how much worse it is now. One thing the author doesn't really address is K-12 education - college educators have to make the best with what the K-12 pipeline pushes out - real improvement will sadly require a K-12 revolution. And yes, electronic device addiction is a thing, with all its concomitant consequences (shortened attention spans, lessened reading comprehension, deterioration of writing skills). But, and perhaps the author's "transactional" observation hints at this, I suspect that students are waking up to the economic and societal shitshow awaiting them, realizing that many of them will in fact be worse off economically than their parents, and conclude, why bother? https://hilariusbookbinder.substack.com/p/the-average-college-student-today
