Dude up the road lost his citrus trees due to the winter storm, so I gave him a Valencia Orange to cheer him up.🤙
Just ordered raised beds for my brand new garden! The soil here is very rocky so i have to have a load of top soil brought in and a neighbor with a loader will fill them.

Since I don't have to fill them manually it made sense to go with 24" tall beds and have it all done at once. Lowe's had them at a pretty good price. Very excited to start gardening again! Stock image below.

Back yard food today - Making bacon - I try to stay away from Big Ag/Big Food nowadays. They use far to many unnecessary chemicals, poisons, vaccines, dyes, GMO's and lord knows what else in their products. Since I do not raise hogs I buy organic pasture raised pork. Yesterday I smoked about 9 pounds of pork bellies to make my own organic bacon, with no nitrites in it. I seasoned it with salt and brown sugar and let it set for 9 days before smoking it. It has been almost 30 years since I realized I was being poisoned by the food I was eating. First thing I cut out was all sodas. Cut way back on sugar. In 2001 I moved to the country and starting growing my own organic fruits and vegetables. Now the wife and I freeze or can most of the veggies that we eat. After retiring a few years ago I went even further. Now I make my own hot sauce, tomato sauce, hot peppers, grow sorghum and make my own pancake syrup, grind my own corn for corn meal, make my own pork BBQ, cook large stews and can/freeze them for easy meals, dehydrate fruit, etc.

First peach blossoms on this young tropic snow peach. Only been in the ground a year so I know I'll have to pick these off to let it focus on root growth here in zone 9b. Perhaps in a few days after I've had a chance to enjoy the blooms!

Peanuts that were planted mainly to improve the soil in a couple of beds. After cleaning out the beds, the few peanuts were left to dry inside the house, then shelled, then roasted in the oven. No oil or salt. Delicious! 😋

Devastating bee colony losses reported across USA. Email put out by American Bee Journal yesterday in regards to this issue. I have now lost 7 out of 12 hives. I sent my bees for examination to Maryland bee laboratory, and the report came back clean. I have not lost any hives overwinter in the last 11 years. This January/February my hives have been decimated! There is a webinar being offered by USDA nationwide next Fri 2/28 at 11 am CT.

It's been 5 weeks and I have 5 Meyer lemon trees coming up from seed. I planted 15 seeds and I'm still hopeful for a few more. The seeds were collected from fresh Meyer lemons, rinsed and immediately planted. I didn't let them dry out.

Good news everyone, my cover for my raised bed arrived today. I already have it installed. I will take a picture tomorrow. It seems pretty sturdy and well made. It has the frame which is shorter in the front and taller in the back. It has an inner screen liner that zips open where you can raise the flap to allow fresh air flow through from the front and back. Then it has the heavier cover that is clear and white where the front and back opens as well as the top has a window that opens but the screen remains closed.

My lettuce and cilantro will be nice and warm tonight since we will have 23 degrees overnight.
To understand the timing of when you need to plant your seedlings in preparation for transplant into your garden, you need to find your Last Frost Date. You can use this free tool to get your date: plantmaps.com/index.php

Different plants require to be started at different times, but all related to the Last Frost Date. For example, Broccoli can be transplanted outside two weeks before the Last Frost Date. To have Broccoli ready to be transplanted by then, you need to start them indoors 4-6 weeks before that date.

Sound confusing? Johnny's Seeds has a terrific tool that allows you to enter your Last Frost Date and it will calculate your setting out date and your indoor starting date. Find it here: johnnyseeds.com/growers-library/seed-planting

And don't forget to check out our organic, non-GMO seeds here:
