Famed photographer Evelyn Cameron took this shot of four magpies perched on a leafless tree branch with hills in the background in Eastern Montana. Magpies are a large bird in the crow family. They are a scavenger as well as a predator of insects, small mammals, and other birds’ eggs and young. Unlike other birds who have a song or few calls, Magpies chatter, whistle, trill and warble. Fun facts: Magpies like bright, shiny things, such as aluminum. The have been known to mimic sounds around them such as wind chimes or barking dogs. Evelyn documented her life as a pioneer near Terry, Montana, and was known for photographing public gatherings and life events that included weddings, family portraits, as well as wildlife. She spent 34 years capturing Eastern Montana as a photographer and diarist. There are 658 digitized Evelyn Cameron photos on the Montana Memory Project website at https://bit.ly/3Rpqb2j [MHS #PhotoArchives, PAc 90-87.G052-007, “Four magpies on a tree branch,” circa 1910]
