Algorithms are the Matrix The definition of an algorithm is a programmed solution to a problem. Since 2010, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook created a solution to a problem - how do we keep people coming back to our platform? Why not suggest things people are interested in. Since then, we have continually confirm our biases - consuming more and more content that we agree with. We all believe that we are right and the ‘other side’ is wrong - that happens when you confirm your bias 1000s of times - through tweets of accounts Twitter suggested based upon the accounts you like. It’s also through groups Facebook suggested because you liked similar ones. It’s also suggested videos and channels. Their solution has created a new problem for those in Silicon Valley. They helped ‘the other side’ cement such a belief in their side that they couldn’t be countered. So, their solution to the problem is to prevent us from communicating. Their motives aren’t sinister though - they are just as much of a victim of the algorithm as we are. They have had years of confirmation bias they believe they are always right. So we have two sides who think they are always right fighting against each other - which leads up to everything we read today. Nobody trusts anyone anymore because we think we are always right and the other side is always wrong. There’s a real solution to this, but it’s not what people think. And it doesn’t involve deactivating Twitter/Facebook/YouTube. That won’t help you, because your reward system in your brain has been rewired to live out the ‘algorithm’. You will constantly want to find new materials that confirm your bias. What’s the solution - be your own leader. Acknowledge the algorithm has defined your beliefs - not you, and develop your own beliefs. Challenge what you believe by documenting reality. Develop a deep spiritual and religious life - look for real truth. We all got duped by a stupid program that kept on suggesting the things we would want to watch based on our preferences. It has defined a generation. Not anymore.
