A Legend Revived: Coal Trains Return To Asheville - 20,676 views Premiered Jul 27, 2026 On July 20th and 21st, 2026, we chased the first ever 744 loaded coal train between Andover, VA and Plant Marshall in Sherrills Ford, NC. This video includes the chase between those two points along with interviews, music, and drone cinema mixed into the production. I knew filming this video that I had to make out extra special, and I hope that you all will find that prominent throughout the film. The video follows the first train over the newly reopened BL-Line, which runs between Bulls Gap and White Pine, TN and hasn't saw a coal train in over 7 years. I never thought in my whole life that i’d be chasing a scheduled Catawba coal train over 300 miles between Andover, VA and Plant Marshall, but here we are... After arriving into Appalachia at 4:00 in the morning on Monday, we found the 110 car consist sitting just Appalachia. The train departed town around 9:00am and headed south for Bulls Gap. This would be the first coal train to traverse the reactivated BL-Line in over 7 years, and the first coal train over the western part of Asheville District since 2020. After a short crew change at control point Ward in Bulls Gap, the train touched the BL-Line for the first time. We chased the slow moving train to control point Douglas, which is the southern end of the connection. The train continued towards Asheville along the French Broad River and eventually would reach Asheville after 10:30pm. The next day, the train made pretty good time departing Asheville until they broke the train in two at the crest of the mountain. The broken knuckle was eventually resolved and the 15,950 ton train would descend the Old Fort Loops, making the heaviest by far to descend the hill since the BL-Line was idled. After arriving in Old Fort, the train was inspected before continuing eastbound to Plant Marshall. What an incredible two days to experience firsthand! The song chosen for this particular film is called "Twenty On High" by Drayton Farley. I chose this song because of its Appalachian-like feel; it also portrays the life of a railroad worker in the mountains of North Carolina. Twenty on High by Drayton Farley was released on the 3rd of March 2023, and all rights are owned by Hargrove Records. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5cAzH3yTMM
