Until now, I’ve criticized some who “spend their time trying to hit a white ball into a hole in the dirt.” But in retirement, I repented. Though I don’t consider myself a golfer, being new at this, I enjoy an occasional game. To some, golf is recreation, to others a sport, or a profession, and to some it can be an idol. But to me, it is a mission field. Hence, the Gospel tract and drop card clipped on my steering wheel. . It is also a suitable exercise, that, Lord willing, I engage in a battle against my cardiomyopathy. Which was all diagnosed after AFIB with RVR, a heart attack, and a series of 3 full cardiac arrests, and an ejection fraction of only 5%. This is related to my ongoing chronic congestive systolic heart failure, an enlarged heart, as well as many other diagnoses. . Though I fight against it, I give thanks and rejoice in the Lord, as perhaps it is a ‘thorn in the flesh’ that He has given me. God is good, and He chastens those whom He loves. . Golfing is also a way to strip pride while being humbled with such low scores compared to others. As James Barrett Reston facetiously said, “Golf: A plague invented by the Calvinistic Scots as a punishment for man's sins!"
