#SummitAmericas hosted by the City of Los Angeles concluded this week. Below are some highlights: - President of Mexico boycotted the event due to the non-invitation of Presidents from Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua. Those countries were excluded by the U.S. due to their socialism/communism governments. - Presidents of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Bolivia all boycotted the event due to "foreign interference" as they described by the US. - Immigration that had been slated to be a main topic of discussion did not lead to any significant agreements since all four countries with the greatest share of undocumented individuals (Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador) were not present at the event. - No Republican political representatives attended the event. This sends a clear message to the rest of Latin America any prescribed policy is only momentary and will be replaced with the next administration due to the lack of compromise on all the pressing issues (immigration, climate change, democratic rights, etc.) facing the Western Hemisphere. Vice-President Kamala Harris's "Call to Action" towards Central America but more so the Northern Triangle countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador has received commitments from international conglomerates reaching $3.2 billion. The criticism is that most community leaders feel this money is a give away to the elite class and will not reach the intended lower socio-economic individuals to prevent them from wanting to migrate to the US. This criticism has been shared by US journalists. - Immigration statistics: 221,000 undocumented individual entered the US in May shattering previous monthly highs 10,000+ unaccompanied children are in US care primarily from the Northern Triangle countries 12,000 unaccompanied children who were reunited or otherwise left the United States re-entered the United States in 2021 122,000 unaccompanied children entered the US in 2021 1,000,000+ undocumented individuals have entered the US in 2022 This was a missed opportunity to provide leadership when it is most needed.
