KNOWING SUFFERING FROM THE INSIDE Animals feel pain, but only human beings suffer. Suffering is an occasion for one of the deepest human experiences: the almost unfathomable concept of redemptive suffering. Saint John Paul II wrote about this topic, but he was not one to theorize and theologize about suffering from the comfort of an office desk. He knew suffering from the inside, most obviously illustrated by his life under the Nazi regime.
