Part 1 Non-fiction book (series) recommendation time Missing: 411 - The CanAm Missing Project - David Paulides http://www.canammissing.com/page/page/8396197.htm This one is important, and a large subject, so it's going to be a 5 parter. But well worth it if you're not already familiar with these books. Prior to reading the “Missing: 411" series I truly believed the wilderness was the last safe place for people. Little did I know you're probably safer in the urban jungle of any major city. (Although after reading "A Sobering Coincidence" I realized that was no longer true either.) "Missing: 411" is a compilation of missing person's cases throughout North America that fit a specific criteria, involving people who have disappeared without a trace under mysterious, unexplainable circumstances in the wilderness. Most either turn up dead or are never found at all, and the few that are found alive often times can't provide any real details about what exactly happened to them. Or the bits and pieces they do convey are stranger than fiction. The books are compilations of all the known facts surrounding each person's disappearance, and is a testament to the thousands of hours of dedicated research put in by author and police veteran David Paulides and his team of current and former law enforcement. They've combed through countless archives, personally interviewed surviving family members of some of the missing/deceased, FOIA'd everybody they could possibly FOIA and visited many of the sites where people have disappeared in order to get a better understanding of the lay of the land. The case histories are broken up into multiple books, almost 10 by now. Most books focus on a specific geographic region, but there are also several specialty topics, including "Hunters," and "A Sobering Coincidence." David Paulides took what he learned from his decades in law enforcement and applied it to his research, so every case is presented as "just facts." Straight up reporting of all known details, w/ no biases or agendas, no pet theories that he's trying to cherry pick evidence to fit. It doesn't matter how bizarre something sounds - if that's what's being reported by a witness/victim, then that's what's being reported, and he relays it verbatim. No theories are provided as to what the cause could be in each case - that's left up to the readers to decide.
