Not only are the opinions of a considerable number of academics being suppressed, the very community of academics is increasingly less diverse in its perspectives on life. In particular, the overwhelming majority of faculty teaching in fields where public policy issues are an important part of the intellectual milieu (the social sciences in particular, but also some of the humanities & fine arts disciplines) are on the left politically. That is not a new phenomenon, but one that has markedly intensified over time. It is not uncommon to find English or sociology departments, for example, where 100 percent of the faculty are registered Democrats. I once met an Ivy League sociologist who said he was a Republican and was so surprised that I asked for his autograph! A recent survey of over three hundred faculty in five academic units at Yale University (the departments of economics, political science, history, & philosophy, & the law school) showed almost twenty-four times as many registered Democrats as Republicans—two of the five surveyed departments (economics & philosophy) had no Republican professors. A 2021 survey revealed that 'fully 7 in 10 conservative American academics say they self-censor in their teaching, research or academic discussions.' Professors are afraid to be heard. ... In occasional meetings of conservative-oriented professors, I often hear & also give this advice: Don’t be too vocal in expressing your opinions until you get tenure. Publish relatively noncontroversial research that does not call too much attention to your conservative orientation. In effect, for career advancement many conservatively oriented professors feel a need to self-censor, to keep their opinions to themselves, an extremely regrettably circumstance in academic communities that flourish from a free & civil exchange of ideas."
