Reactionaries speak of an Axial Age, which, in so many words, is the epoch when the ways of men ceased emerging from natural and eugenic hierachies and began to be designed, and thus inevitably fell to the conceits of men who failed to understand their times and the times that would follow. My own formulation is that we lost our way when we went from abhorring the foreigner to abhorring the heretic. Because while the foreigner's nature can never be kept from the scrutiny of natives, the heretic's nature shifts and multiplies according to the fancies of those most given to formulating seductive ideas. Hence the proliferating obscenities of modernity and the authority of the obscenes.
