On June 15, A.D. 1215, King John of England signed the Magna Carta. His predecessors and successors did substantially the same thing, though the Magna Carta was a more detailed and explicit document than others. Specifically, it added clarity to the biblical principle that the King, as other men, is subject to the law, and may be held accountable to it by his subjects. Today, most prefer a mess of pottage handed out to them over the rich heritage of law that is ours by descent from the historic rights of free Englishmen. But we reaffirm and reassert the principles declared 807 years ago at Runnymede by King John, in the midst of the clergymen and nobles whom he sought to govern. No one is above the law. Rulers may be held accountable for its breach by those they govern. May God defend us as we defend these blessings with which he has entrusted us.
