A woman was detained at an airport in Vietnam — but the scariest part of her story wasn’t just being detained. It was being afraid to post about it. Her friend told her to save the video to drafts and wait until she left the country before posting, because if the wrong people saw it, they could potentially hold her there longer. That one moment explains something a lot of Americans take for granted. Your freedom of speech only means something when there is something standing behind it. The First Amendment gives you the right to speak. The Second Amendment gives that right teeth. In America, we are so used to criticizing the government, posting about it, making content, and speaking freely that we forget most of the world does not live like this. In some countries, your rights stop the second the government decides they do. That is the world without real constitutional protection.
