Seventh-day Adventists and the Dangerous Spirit of Judaizing In the first-century, Paul battled a dangerous distortion of the gospel known as Judaizing. The Judaizers believed that faith in Christ was not enough; that Gentle believers must also keep parts of the Mosaic Law, especially circumcision, to be fully accepted by Yahweh. Today, a similar error continues through the teachings of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) movement. Though they focus on Sabbath observance rather than circumcision, the principle is identical. Both systems reintroduce shadows of the Old Covenant as binding requirements for those who are already under the New. The Law Was a Shadow Paul wrote in Colossians 2:16-17: "Let no one judge you in food or drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is Christ." The weekly Sabbath, given to Israel, along with the feast days and sacrifices, pointed forward to the Messiah. Yeshua fulfilled every one of them. The shadows have served their purpose, we are no longer under a tutor, the Light has come. To continue clinging to those symbols is to miss the very One they pointed to. It's like gazing at the moon while ignoring the sun that gives it light. Yeshua is Our Rest Hebrews 4 explains that the Sabbath rest was only a type-a prophetic picture of the true rest found in Messiah. Yeshua Himself said: "Come to Me, all you who are labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."-Matthew 11:28 Our rest is no longer found in a day of the week, but in a Person. to insist that one must keep the seventh day to be right with Yahweh is to place confidence in the shadow rather than the substance-in the law rather than the finished work of the cross. The Feasts and Their Fulfillment Everyone of Yahweh's seven feasts foreshadowed Yeshua: Passover-the crucifixion of the Lamb Unleavened Bread-His sinless body in the grave Firstfruits-His resurrection Pentecost-the giving of the Spirit Trumpets, Atonement, Tabernacles-The fullness of redemption completed in Christ. To return to these types as if they still carried covenantal obligation is to rebuild what Messiah already tore down. Law or Grace Paul warned the Galatians that those, like @innovated, who sought to be justified by the Law had "fallen from grace" (Galatians 5:4). Whether the issue is circumcision, dietary restrictions, or Sabbath observance, the principle remains the same, adding law-keeping to the gospel nullifies the grace of Yahweh. Our standing before Yahweh depends solely on the finished work of Yeshua the Messiah. He fulfilled the Law, established the New Covenant, and became our eternal rest. Therefore, the day of the week on which we gather to worship is of no more importance than our physical descent from Abraham. What matters is being born of teh Spirit and resting by faith in the One who fulfilled every shadow.
