The Last Days-of What? When John wrote his first epistle, he told his audience plainly: "Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by this we know that it is the last hour."-1 John 2:18 John didn't say, "it will be the last hour, someday." He said "it is" the last hour, in his own generation. So, the question is: the last days of what? Peter's Witness Peter said the same thing decades earlier on the Day of Pentecost: "This is what was spoken by the prophet Joel; 'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh...'"-Acts 2:16-17 Peter told his first-century audience that Joel's "last days: prophecy was being fulfilled right then, not thousands of years later. The Apostles' Consistent Timeframe All through the New Testament, the inspired writers agreed that they were living in the closing chapter of something ancient, not the beginning of something for us to finish 2,000 years later. -Hebrews 1:1-2-"God...has in these last days spoken to us through his Son." -James 5:3-"You have heaped up treasure in the last days." -1 Peter 4:7-"The end of all things is at hand." -Hebrews 8:13-"What is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away." Every one of those time statements points to something that was "at hand", "ready" and already in motion in the first century. The Last Days of the Mosaic Age What was ending? Not planet Earth. Not human history. But the Old Covenant system-the Law, the Temple, the priesthood, and the sacrifices that pointed to Messiah. Yeshua's death and resurrection fulfilled the shadows of the Law, and the destruction of Jerusalem in AD70 brought that Old Covenant world to a final close. Those were the "last days", the last days of the Mosaic Age, when righteousness was sought through the Law. The New Covenant kingdom had come, and Yeshua was revealed as the true Temple and eternal High Priest. The New Age Has Come The apostles weren't warning about our end, they were announcing theirs! They stood at the end of one covenantal world and the dawn of another: "Therefore, if anyone is in Messiah, he is a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."-2 Corinthians 5:17 The "last days" belonged to the Old Covenant. We now live in the everlasting day of the New Covenant, in the kingdom that will never end.
