The Nightshade Myth When the typical person hears “nightshade”, they automatically think that its a deadly, bad, toxic plant. However, that’s not ENTIRELY correct! Yes, there are variations of nightshade that are toxic and deadly, but not all of them are! For example, the tomato. A humble, multipurpose, and multicultural food, found in grocery stores all over the world, used in a wide variety of dishes in many countries, is actually a part of the nightshade family! One of the plants I would like to discuss here, is eastern black nightshade. This plant is modest, and oftentimes seen as a weed, but before you completely trash it, its not as much of a weed as you think! This plant gets a cluster of little white to purplish white flowers, with 5 petals, star shaped, which will eventually turn to small, black or deep purple fruits. The plant itself, and its unripe berries ARE toxic; however, the ripe berries of eastern black nightshade can be eaten! Does this mean you can go all out and make an eastern black nightshade sauce for spaghetti or something? NO! It still has a mild Toxicity, so use sparingly, but it still can be eaten! As is standard ALWAYS 100% ID the plant and confirm its edibility before consumption! Its always good practice when consuming a new wild edibles you’d never tried before to consume a very small amount (like 1 berry), and wait 24 to 48 hours to find out if your stomach can handle it. -read the entire post by subscribing- https://www.psycho-dodo-clan.com/subscriptions
