Saint Polycarp (ca. 69-ca. 155) Bishop of Smyrna, a disciple of St. John the theologian along with Saint Ignatius, Saint Polycarp, died as a martyr around February 23, 155 AD, they attempted to burn him at the stake, but according to early eyewitness accounts in the Martyrdom of Polycarp, the flames swirled around him like a ship's sail without harming his body. Seeing that the fire did not kill him, an executioner was sent to stab him with a dagger, after which his remains were burned.
