MAKING THE VILLAIN MORE INTERESTING THAN THE HERO Modern villains increasingly get the charisma, intelligence, philosophy, style, and memorable dialogue—while the hero often exists mainly to stop them. Sometimes you leave wondering who the movie actually wanted you to remember. 8. SECRET ORGANIZATIONS Shadow councils. Intelligence agencies. Hidden laboratories. Corporate cabals. Ancient orders. Underground facilities. Apparently, nothing interesting can happen without someone operating several floors beneath the public version of reality. 7. SHOWING US THAT THE OFFICIAL STORY IS ALMOST NEVER THE WHOLE STORY This may be Hollywood’s most persistent obsession. The protagonist begins inside an accepted reality. Then comes the anomaly.
