Howard Beale looks into the camera and describes a society surrounded by dysfunction—crime, economic anxiety, polluted environments, institutional failure—and says something more important than “get angry.” He is describing normalization. The moment when the abnormal becomes ordinary. When yesterday’s scandal becomes today’s headline and tomorrow’s background noise. When people stop asking: “How did we allow this?” and begin saying: “That’s just how things are.” That transition may be one of the most important mechanisms of social decline. Because human beings possess an extraordinary survival mechanism: We adapt. Unfortunately, we can adapt to almost anything. We adapt to surveillance. We adapt to debt. We adapt to declining purchasing power. We adapt to poisoned food. We adapt to deteriorating communities. We adapt to corruption. We adapt to endless war. We adapt to censorship. We adapt to being tracked. We adapt to institutions lying. We adapt to governments spending money that does not yet exist. We adapt to corporations knowing increasingly intimate details about our behavior. We adapt to children growing up inside algorithmic environments designed to capture their attention. And eventually something extraordinary happens: The emergency disappears without the problem disappearing. Nothing was solved. We simply became accustomed to it. That is normalization. And once you understand normalization, you begin seeing history differently. Civilizations rarely awaken one morning and consciously decide to surrender their freedoms, communities, institutions, privacy, money, health, or sovereignty. The process is usually incremental. The unacceptable becomes controversial. The controversial becomes debatable. The debatable becomes tolerated. The tolerated becomes normal. The normal becomes institutionalized. And eventually questioning it becomes radical. That progression should terrify anyone who studies human behavior. Because the greatest limitation of tyranny, corruption, exploitation, or institutional incompetence is not necessarily resistance. It is human perception.
