I'm always fascinated by these articles about schools figuring out how to teach kids to read. They act like it is complicated and you need specialized training or something. Homeschoolers have been teaching their kids to read forever and it is no big deal. When my boys were little, I read them delightful children's books for the joy of it and then we used Bob Books starting in kindergarten to learn the sounds. Read to your kids, then teach them phonics using Bob Books or some such phonics set. No big deal. You don't need a degree in education or any specialized training to figure it out.
