The young person listening to a famous musician can begin adopting not merely the music, but the worldview associated with the musician. The movie star becomes a cultural authority. The comedian becomes a political commentator. The athlete becomes a moral spokesman. The entertainer becomes an interpreter of society. And eventually the question changes from: "Is this right?" - TO "Is this what people like us believe?" That is an enormous psychological shift. The desire to be IN can become more powerful than the desire to be right. And once conformity is attached to popularity, the mechanism becomes self-reinforcing. Go along to get along. Don't be the person who objects to what everyone else has already accepted.
