Every false gospel wears a different mask but says the same thing underneath: you have something to contribute. Paul saw this in his own people. Not ignorance of God, but zeal without knowledge, "seeking to establish their own righteousness, they did not submit to God's righteousness" (Romans 10:3). That's not a first century problem. That's every heart's default setting. Grace offends the flesh because grace leaves nothing for you to boast in. A righteousness you build, you can measure, display, compare, be proud of. A righteousness you receive humbles you all the way down. That's why the counterfeit gospel never dies. It just changes its wardrobe. Temples instead of ladders. Ordinances instead of works of the law. Merit instead of circumcision. Different centuries, same offer the serpent made in the garden: you can have a hand in your own glory. But the righteousness that saves was never yours to build. It was purchased, finished, and given. Christ did not almost save you and leave the rest to your effort. He did not open a door and hand you the climb. He accomplished what you could never establish, and he gives it freely to everyone who stops trying to build what has already been built. Stop establishing. Start receiving. Post Tenebras Lux ✝️
