It’s a miracle that Raul Mendez survived being shot in the head by a neighbor who opened fire at a 4th of July celebration he and his family were attending last year. Even though he was badly wounded and covered in blood, Raul heard his family’s cries for help and managed to get up and shoot the killer, ending the rampage that left two guests dead and four injured. We will never know how many lives Raul Mendez saved that day because he had his conceal and carry permit and training. Raul lost his left eye, fractured his jaw, suffered a torn eardrum, and lost his sense of smell as a result of the shooting, but has been on the mend since. He became a certified NRA (National Rifle Association) instructor last month and is preparing to lead classes about gun safety. He encourages people to embrace their Second Amendment rights. He told the media, “I am that living proof that firearms or a gun in the hands of law-abiding citizens save lives.” He’s right.
