My prayerful studies, observations, and experiences, tell me the following: A Quick Summary Path on Baptism ▪ John the Baptist came to the scene baptizing people with the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. ▪ Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. ▪ We read in the Bible about Jesus baptizing. However, it was his disciples who actually did the baptizing/immersing. ▪ The event of the thief on the cross happen under the time span called “The Law” (before Christ's death, burial, and resurrection), and not under the time span called “Grace” (after Christ's death, burial, and resurrection). The thief did not decline to be baptized, and if we decline to be baptized, our action does not parallel the thief on the cross.. ▪ Before Christ ascended up into heaven, he commanded his disciples to go and do the following: ▪ Preach the gospel to the whole world; ▪ Baptize the people who believe on Jesus Christ; ▪ Teach them to obey Christ’s commandments. ▪ On the first day of the Church, we find St. Peter, and the Apostles, instructing new believers on how to get right with God. He told them to repent, be baptized, and receive the Holy Ghost. On the same day they baptized about three thousand new converts into Christ. (Acts 2:37–41) ▪ We find St. Paul re-baptizing people who were already baptized unto John the Baptist's baptism. Why? Although these people were baptized, they were not baptized into Jesus Christ, so Paul re-baptized them “in the name of the Lord Jesus”. (Acts 19:1–7) Baptism is a commandment from Jesus Christ. ▪ Teaching that baptism is not necessary is actually teaching that it is not necessary to obey Christ. Not striving to obey Christ, in all things, is not following Jesus Christ (it is not following Jesus Christ's instructions); it is rejecting Christ as our Lord (it is rejecting Christ as the one we obey). ▪ The water has no power, however, Biblically, water is a part of the baptism ceremony. ▪ How can being baptized into Christ be seen as working towards earning our way into Heaven? Going to Heaven cannot be earned. ▪ Baptism is the ceremony for being baptized into Jesus Christ (putting on Christ, joining Christ.) Be sure to note the words, BAPTIZED INTO, and, PUT ON --- in Galatians 3:27 “27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” ▪ When the Bible was translated, they did not translate the baptism words into English, they simply transferred them into the English alphabet/pronunciation; it is called transliteration. The Greek word means: to Dip/Immerse. Get your New Testament Word Study Dictionary and check it out. ▪ Baptism is our ceremony for entering, joining, putting on, Jesus Christ. We enter (join, put on) Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. Thus, water baptism wears the Biblical tag, “for the remission of sins”. ▪ Most churches baptize using the names “Father”, “Son”, and “Holy Ghost”, (referencing Matthew 28:19). However, nine days after Mathew 28:19, on the first day of the Church, the people were told to be baptized in the name of “Jesus Christ”. AND STARTING FROM THE FIRST DAY of the Church, the people in the Bible, who were baptized, were baptized into Jesus Christ. ▪ Being baptized into Jesus Christ is not Son only baptism. Since there is only one God, not three, there is no one to leave out.
