For everyone considering brooder options for chicks this spring, we actually do cold brooding (no electric heater at all) using this setup and we live in a very cold area. It's worked great for the past two batches of meat birds, our first generation of layers (now the broody mama's raise their own), and ducklings. That is every chick we've had that was not raised by a real mama bird. No risk of fire, no over stimulation from unnatural light, and a much more natural way for a baby bird to grow up. We are on a little solar system so it's great that this uses no power. For reference, we live a bit over 6000 feet above sea level in the WY mountains and get frosts and freezes all summer long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rU8MLhyaAiU #brooder #chicks #offgrid #coldbrooding #homestead
