Partaking of the Lord’s Supper “Unworthily” 1 Corinthians 11: 27So then, whoever eats this bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily [or, in an unfitting manner] will be guilty of the body of the Lord and of the blood of the Lord. 28But let a person be examining himself, and in this manner let him be eating of the bread and let him be drinking of the cup. 29For the one eating and drinking unworthily [or, in an unfitting manner], eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning [or, correctly judging] the body of the Lord. [Note: The rendering of “unworthily” comes from ἀναξίως (anaxíōs). This adverb describes an action performed in a manner that does not match the “weight” or worth of the object to which it is directed. Here, it describes partaking of the Lord’s Supper in a manner that fails to reflect the “weight” of Christ’s body and blood.
