MEEK DOES NOT MEAN WEAK. One of the most misunderstood words in the teachings of Jesus is meek. “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” For centuries, meek has been heard as: Be quiet. Be compliant. Don't resist. Don't make waves. Let people walk over you. But according to the Aramaic interpretation of Neil Douglas-Klotz, there is something much more powerful happening here. The Aramaic word makikhe, translated as “meek,” carries the sense of softening what has become rigid within. Douglas-Klotz renders the teaching: “Healthy are those who have softened what is rigid within; they shall receive physical vigor and strength from the universe.” Read that again. Softened does not mean weakened. It means becoming flexible where you have become hardened. It means releasing the rigidity of fear. The rigidity of resentment. The rigidity of the need to control. The rigidity of the ego that says, I must fight everything myself. Meekness is not surrendering your sovereignty. It is surrendering your inner rigidity so that something greater than your defensive self can move through you. And this changes everything. Because a rigid person can be controlled through fear. A rigid person can be provoked. A rigid person must constantly defend an identity, a position, a wound, a certainty. But a person who has softened within? That person becomes extraordinarily difficult to manipulate. They can remain open without becoming passive. They can remain compassionate without becoming compliant. They can speak truth without becoming violent. They can stand firmly without becoming hard. That is not weakness. That is embodied strength. Perhaps “Blessed are the meek” is not an instruction to become smaller. Perhaps it is an invitation to become less rigid, more receptive, more alive—and therefore more capable of receiving the strength of the Earth and the Divine. The world does not need more people who are hard. It needs people who are strong enough to remain soft.
