THE LESSON OF THE FIVE SHADOWS A student came to the master and said: “I have found the enemies inside myself. Ego. Envy. Anger. Ignorance. Fear. Teach me how to destroy them.” The master looked at him for a long time. Then he said: “If you destroy every messenger who enters your house, how will you ever receive the message?” The student was silent. So the master placed five stones before him. “The first stone is ego. Ego is not confidence. Ego is the frightened self pretending it cannot be taught. It says, ‘I already know,’ because it is terrified of the humility required to learn. To learn, you must bow before what you do not yet see. This is why ego resists wisdom. Not because wisdom is weak. Because wisdom begins with surrender.” The master touched the second stone. “This is envy. Envy is your attention leaving its throne and kneeling before another person’s path. It makes you forget your own field because you are staring at someone else’s harvest. But listen carefully. Envy is not only poison. Buried inside it is often a clue. It may be showing you a gift you abandoned, a discipline you avoided, a possibility within yourself that you have not yet claimed. The fool resents what another has become. The student asks: What is this revealing about what I have not yet cultivated?” Then the master touched the third stone. “This is anger. Anger is fire. In the hands of the unconscious, fire burns the house down. In the hands of the disciplined, fire becomes a lamp, a forge, a boundary, a blade. Anger is often compressed pain seeking direction. It can reveal where dignity was violated. It can reveal where truth was denied. But if anger becomes your eyes, you will only see enemies. So the question is not: Am I angry? The question is: Can I remain clear while the fire is present?” The master touched the fourth stone. “This is ignorance. Do not mistake ignorance for lack of information. Many people carry entire libraries inside their minds and still cannot see. Ignorance is the unexamined lens. It is not what you do not know. It is the part of you that refuses to question how you know. Until the lens is purified, even truth becomes distorted when it passes through you.” Finally, the master touched the fifth stone. “This is fear. Fear stands at the edge of every threshold. Sometimes it is a guardian warning you of real danger. Sometimes it is a jailer wearing the mask of protection. It will tell you to stay small and call it safety. It will tell you to delay your becoming and call it wisdom. Discernment is learning which fear protects your life and which fear protects your old identity.” The student looked at the five stones and asked: “Then I should not destroy them?” The master shook his head. “No. You must learn to read them.” Ego, when understood, becomes humility. Envy, when understood, becomes direction. Anger, when understood, becomes clarity. Ignorance, when understood, becomes inquiry. Fear, when understood, becomes discernment. The lower self is ruled by what arises. The awakened self studies what arises. The master does not become free because nothing dark ever moves within him. He becomes free because nothing dark can move within him unconsciously. That is the path. Not the destruction of the shadow.
