Many people believe that our first amendment to the Constitution supports all religions. They think that our Protestant Christian founders and descendants of the Pilgrims and Puritans (Protestant Christians), would have supported multiple pagan religions to be freely exercised within our nation. If you are a reader of the Bible, you know that God hates idolatry, which is the worship of false gods. He brought judgment upon nations time and again, including Israel and Judah, for the worship of idols. All pagan religions are the worship of false gods and a violation of the 2nd Commandment of the Ten Commandments, which our founders highly regarded. Do you really think the founders incorporated the protection of idolatry in our founding document? They did not! The word "religion" in the 1700's was synonymous with "Christianity." The first amendment was only meaning "an establishment of [a Protestant denomination of Christianity] religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof [any Protestant denomination]." Their fear was an established denomination like Anglicanism, which was the established religion in England. All other sects or denominations, such as Puritans or Separatists (the Pilgrims), were persecuted by the gov't. Some of their leaders were martyred. Most Americans of the 21st century have little knowledge of these facts of history, which were not taught in most public schools. Thus, the first amendment to them is simply "the freedom of religion." They do not understand that our forefathers never, ever meant to give license to the worship of heathen gods in America!
