The American Dream The bottom 50% of Americans own just 2.5% of the nation’s wealth. The richest 1% of Americans now own 31.6% of all household wealth, the highest share since WW2. The top 10% own 67.5% of all U.S. wealth, leaving just 32.5% for the remaining 90% of Americans. The top 0.1% alone own around 14.5% of all household wealth, almost six times as much as the entire bottom half of the country. The wealth share of the top 1% has risen from about 23% in 1989 to over 31.6% today, while the bottom 50%’s share has fallen from around 3.5% to roughly 2.5%. ‘They call it the American Dream because you have to be asleep to believe it.’ —George Carlin
